APPELLATION OF ORIGIN

An Appellation of Origin is a geographical indication that identifies a product as originating from a specific region, where its quality and characteristics are fundamentally linked to its geographical environment.

The Tequila Appellation of Origin (DOT) is a designation that guarantees the quality and authenticity of this iconic Mexican spirit. It represents a rich history and legacy of production under specific standards within a defined geographical region, reflecting the unique characteristics of Tequila, its people, and its deep connection to the land.
The DOT is protected and regulated by Mexican law, including Article 156 of the Intellectual Property Law, which defines the specific geographical area where Tequila can be produced. This area encompasses 181 municipalities across five states: Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. These unique territories are legally recognized for Tequila production.

Factors that influence the Tequila Appellation of Origin:

Human factors
Traditions and knowledge passed down through generations, ensuring the unique character of Tequila production.
CLIMATE
Primarily temperate climates with moderate rainfall.
AGAVE
Only the blue agave (Agave tequilana Weber) is permitted for Tequila production.
SOIL
Diverse soil types with a pH typically ranging from 5.5 to 7 and an average organic matter content of 2.5% to 4.9%.
Once the conditions for an Appellation of Origin are met, Article 157 of the Intellectual Property Law establishes that its protection begins with an official declaration. The General Declaration of Protection for the Tequila Appellation of Origin was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on December 9, 1974.
