Zapopan, Jalisco, January 21, 2025.- To achieve the strategic planning of the Agave Tequila Productive Chain and strengthen the tequila agroindustry, the coordinated efforts of all sectors involved, represented in the Board of Directors of the Tequila Regulatory Council (TRC), will be essential.
“2024 was a year of challenges, but these also turned into great opportunities for the Productive Chain. With the union of agave producers, tequila makers, bottlers, marketers and government agencies, we have been able to move forward in the face of the major challenges ahead ” said the director of the Tequila Regulatory Council, Ramón González Figueroa.
At the end of 2024, it was confirmed that Tequila continues to win over consumers in Mexico and around the world. From January to December, production reached495.8 million liters of Tequila, requiring 1.8 million tons of agave, while exports totaled 400.3 million liters.
The United States remained the top destination for Tequila exports, increasing from 321.6 million liters to 334.9 million liters, a growth of 4.1%. The top ten Tequila-importing countries also include Spain, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Japan, France, Italy, Australia, and Colombia.
By the end of 2024, the industry recorded 206 Tequila producers, 42,441 agave producers, and 2,991 brands linked to an authorized producer.
In 2025, the challenges and commitments of the Tequila agroindustry will continue. The vision of growth will remain a constant for Mexico’s national drink. Expanding into new markets will be a priority this year, while efforts will continue to strengthen Tequila’s presence in countries where it is already available. This will further position Tequila as a symbol of Mexicanness, culture, quality, authenticity, and sustainability. Currently, the Tequila Appellation of Origin is recognized in 57 countries, and efforts are underway to extend this protection to Turkey, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, Bolivia, Paraguay, South Korea, Angola and the African Intellectual Property Office (OAPI) .
Collaboration with authorities at all levels of government will be crucial for the strategic planning of this Productive Chain—from the fields to commercialization. The success of Tequila is a shared effort, and this work will continue on the Production Sustainability Strategy. This year, there will be a review of indicators and progress towards achieving the objectives set and meeting the goals established for 2030.
