Zapopan, Jalisco, February 13, 2025.- The general director of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), Santiago Nieto Castillo, visited the Tequila Regulatory Council A.C. (TRC), after a meeting with representatives of the tequila agroindustry, reaffirming his commitment to protect the Denominations of Origin of Mexico, such as Tequila, by supporting the conformity assessment model that the CRT has been carrying out for more than three decades.

“The IMPI’s commitment is very clear regarding the existence of only one certifying body, we are going to have the meeting to see if there are any other details in the regulations and we have the working table on piracy, I have Marcelo Ebrard’s express instruction on this matter” … “We want to give a centrality to the issue of Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications”

During the meeting, the first vice president of the CRT Board of Directors, Francisco González García, pointed out some of the lines of action that are proposed in order to protect the Agave Tequila Productive Chain. “The Tequila Regulatory Council, together with the Mexican government, has the great responsibility of inspecting, certifying and safeguarding both in Mexico and abroad our first Mexican Denomination of Origin, Tequila.” “Count on us to collaborate with you in this task of promoting and strengthening industrial property in Mexico,” said Francisco González.

Mexico has 18 Denominations of Origin and at this meeting it was also agreed that the country has a great wealth of products that could have this distinction. In addition, the importance of the recognition of the Appellation of Origin in other countries was discussed in order to have the legal tools in case of detecting any product that wants to be misused.

The Tequila Appellation of Origin is protected in 57 countries and in 2025 the number of countries that recognize it under an intellectual property figure is expected to increase.
