SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

In 2016 the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), together with the Mario Molina Center and the tequila agroindustry, developed the Sustainability Strategy for the Agave Tequila Production Chain including goals to be achieved between 2025 and 2030.

Agave Tequila Sustainability

Strategy

BY THE YEAR 2027, THE SUPPLY OF AGAVE TEQUILANA WEBER BLUE VARIETY FOR TEQUILA PRODUCTION ENSURES NO DEFORESTATION OF NATURAL AREAS, TAKING 2016 AS A BASELINE.

ARA CERTIFICATION

As part of the sustainability strategy of the Agave Tequila production chain to position Tequila as a deforestation-free beverage, the Tequila Regulatory Council together with the government of the State of Jalisco, developed the ARA certification mark (AGAVE RESPONSIBILITY ARA). ARA Certification (AGAVE RESPONSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL), which seeks to guarantee consumers that Tequila was made with agave grown on land that did not suffer deforestation, taking 2016 as the base year.

The ARA CERTIFICATION has prevented the deforestation of

Agave producers from Jalisco and Guanajuato can inquire, before establishing a plantation, to determine whether their plot is in an agricultural production area.

At a global level, there is a greater interest of consumers in knowing the details in the preparation of the products they consume.

The tequila sector is at the forefront by promoting the first deforestation-free certification for alcoholic beverages in the world.

Tequila generates added value to serve a specific market.

OTHER SUSTAINABILITY ACTIONS

Reforestation actions

The tequila agroindustry, through the Trust for the administration of the State’s forestry development program, contributed 7 million pesos for the operation of a nursery that will produce 50,000 pine and oak plants to reforest the Bosque de la Primavera and San Ignacio, Cerro Gordo.

In 2023, 64,400 plants were planted and harvested to be used in reforestation during the year.

Jalisco State Energy Agency - CRT Collaboration Agreement

The CRT’s collaboration agreement with the Jalisco State Energy Agency was signed with the goal of promoting, encouraging, coordinating, cooperating and assisting in the development of sustainable projects for the Agave Tequila Production Chain, related to replacing the use of fossil fuels, the treatment of wastewater, the use of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

The professionalization of the Agave Tequila chain’s personnel is also included, through courses and training in topics related to energy efficiency.
IN FEBRUARY 2023, THE TEQUILA REGULATORY COUNCIL (CRT) WAS ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE OF THE BOARD OF ASSOCIATIONS OF THE JALISCO BUSINESS CLIMATE ALLIANCE, WHICH SEEKS TO PROMOTE LEADERSHIP AND INCREASE THE AMBITION TO DECARBONIZE THE ECONOMY OF JALISCO BY 2050.

Business Climate Alliance of Jalisco

On February 2, 2023, the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT) was elected Representative of the Board of Associations of the Jalisco Business Climate Alliance.

The Business Climate Alliance is a joint effort between the government and the productive sector on climate action and sustainability that seeks to foster leadership and increase ambition towards the decarbonization of Jalisco’s economy by 2050.

The CRT’s participation in the Alliance will seek to strengthen the tequila agribusiness to achieve its decarbonization goals.
IN FEBRUARY 2023, THE CRT PRESENTED THE RESEARCH CONSORTIUM FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY OF AGAVE TEQUILA THROUGH AN 8 MILLION PESOS INITIAL INVESTMENT.
RESEARCH CONSORTIUM FOR AGAVE TEQUILA SUSTAINABILITY
The purpose of the Research Consortium is to coordinate the research that universities, research centers and innovation centers have conducted on Tequila, in order to generate technological practices and innovations that will enable this production chain to meet its sustainability objectives.

The Consortium is open to all projects related to environmental, social and economic issues such as:
